Queen Camilla’s son Tom Parker Bowles shares rare update on his mother

Queen Camilla and King Charles are preparing for their first extensive overseas tour. In just a few weeks, the couple will embark on a five-day journey to Australia and Samoa, but the arrangements will differ from what royal fans are used to.

While King Charles is recovering from his bout with cancer, Queen Camilla has taken on a massive responsibility in his absence. At the same time, the queen has faced her own challenges, trying to help her husband avoid stress as he makes his way back to the royal fold. She even suggested not revealing his cancer diagnosis to the public, but Charles decided to do so anyway.

The Palace has been giving several updates on Kate Middleton’s recovery from cancer, but there has been relative silence regarding Charles’ health. However, just days ago, a surprising person—Tom Parker Bowles, the queen’s son—gave a new update on King Charles and Queen Camilla.

King Charles’ cancer diagnosis shocked royal fans worldwide. It was discovered during an unrelated procedure for an enlarged prostate in early 2024, and since then, the monarch has been receiving treatment and spending a lot of time recovering at Sandringham.

Queen Camilla praised for her work in King Charles’ absence

While the King was recuperating, Queen Camilla stepped up in his absence. The former Parker-Bowles, who was once one of the most disliked royal figures following her affair with Charles, has become a beloved queen, and her work has not gone unnoticed.

For example, in April, her popularity increased from 35 percent to 38 percent in just two months, according to a survey of 1,089 British adults aged 18 to 75, per Express.

Since then, the queen has been increasingly visible in public, taking on duties such as giving speeches, which she reportedly usually “hates.”

Royal expert Angela Levin praised the queen for stepping up during this challenging situation earlier this year. Meanwhile, on the popular royal podcast Royally Obsessed, co-hosts Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie applauded Camilla.

“I feel like on the heels of Camilla taking on solo engagements daily last week…to see Camilla step up, keep calm and carry on, and knowing what she’s also managing with her own kind of reactions and mental health over what’s going on with her husband, it’s the whole difference between duty and family,” Roberta Fiorito said, as reported by Express.

“You have to continue what you have to do for the crown, but you also have to process your emotions over Charles’s cancer diagnosis.”

“People had never seen her so worried”

Bowie added that Camilla had put on a brave face, suggesting that it must have been hard for her to “bite her tongue about the real issues that were going on.”

“I think that has to be so incredibly hard, and such a heavy, heavy burden, to do while in public, too. It’s a lot to balance all at once,” Bowie said on Royally Obsessed.

It has been around nine months since King Charles received the shocking cancer diagnosis. Exactly what type of cancer he has been battling isn’t known. However, a royal insider has revealed that the monarch might open up about what specific kind of cancer he is battling.

Speaking to The Sun, a source said that Charles maintains a positive outlook during his ongoing treatment and has received a “better than expected” report.

Queen Camilla has been highly supportive of her husband during this very tough time. But while she put on a brave face in public, she has shown a different side in private. The Daily Mail spoke to some of Camilla’s friends in celebration of her 77th birthday in July, who revealed she is anxious about her husband’s well-being.

“In private, people had never seen her so worried. Forget who they are for a second. Look at it from a human level. Her beloved husband was facing a very serious condition. The battle of his life. It was hugely tough,” one person close to Camilla said.

Another friend added: “The public had no idea what she was going through. She was speaking to patients, survivors and even the families of those who had lost their lives to this awful disease in front of the cameras. And she didn’t even blink. That takes serious guts.”

Royal expert claims Queen Camilla was against King Charles revealing cancer diagnosis

Although Charles wanted to, and later did, share his cancer diagnosis publicly, a new bombshell claim reveals that not everyone in his close circle believed it to be a good idea. Robert Jobson, author of the 2023 book Our King: Charles III: The Man and the Monarch Revealed, claimed to The Independent that Queen Camilla initially opposed the decision to disclose King Charles’ condition.

“Queen Camilla had initially been against disclosing his condition, but the King overruled her, as he felt it was a chance to take a lead, and in doing so to encourage men experiencing similar symptoms to seek timely medical attention,” Jobson said.

The author continued by claiming that the monarch overruled his wife, feeling that he could “take the lead” in encouraging other men who experienced similar symptoms to seek medical attention before it was too late.

“There was a significant increase in searches related to enlarged prostate on the National Health Service website following the monarch’s revelation. The NHS England page on benign prostate enlargement had more than 26,000 visits in the 48 hours after the announcement, compared to a daily average of just 1,400,” Jobson continued.

Still, he wouldn’t disclose Queen Camilla’s reason for disagreeing with Charles. However, the author claimed that Charles wanted to avoid “fake news.”

“He was lauded for doing so, with commentators saying he had ushered in a new era of transparency in matters of health and the Royal Family,” Jobson added.

“He won’t slow down and won’t do what he’s told”

King Charles has since returned to royal duty. The king and queen have often appeared together since the cancer diagnosis was revealed, but there have not been many updates on how the monarch is actually doing.

In June, appearing at the second annual Queen’s Reading Room Literary Festival at Hampton Court Palace, Camilla said, according to author Lee Child, that Charles is “doing fine except he won’t slow down and won’t do what he’s told.”

Lee Child added it “sounds to me like a typical husband.”

Some weeks ago, while visiting the Macmillan Wellbeing Hub, Queen Camilla gave another update on her husband.

“He is doing very well,” as per The Mirror.

For understandable reasons, King Charles has not been traveling that much this past half-year. In June, he attended the D-Day commemorations in France, marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day, but otherwise the king has stayed in the UK.

However, in just a few weeks, he and Camilla will embark on quite the journey: In October, the king and queen will embark on a tour to Australia and Samoa, King Charles’ first major overseas trip as king.

“Their Majesties, The King and Queen, will undertake an Autumn tour from Friday 18th to Saturday 26th October 2024,” a Palace spokesperson said. “This will include a royal visit to Australia, State Visit to the Independent State of Samoa and attendance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.”

The program will be structured around celebrating the host countries as well as reflecting the King and Queen’s interests and work.

King Charles & Queen Camilla – upcoming Australia trip

“The King, who has this year been receiving treatment for cancer, will meet Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scoyler, both Australians of the Year, and will hear about the work they do to help those affected by melanoma, one of Australia’s most common cancers.”

While a major overseas tour includes a busy schedule each day, there will be some significant differences this time.

According to royal expert Cameron Walker, King Charles will face “very clear adaptations,” which will be a “big contrast” to when his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, visited Australia.

“The late Queen Elizabeth visited every state of Australia, every territory including seven capital cities and 70 towns in 58 days,” Walker told GB News. “In contrast, the King is going to be spending, we understand, less than a week in Australia and he’s only going to be visiting Sydney and Canberra.”

Cameron continued: “As we knew, doctors had given the King the green light to travel. It is going to be the first long-haul travel the King has done since his cancer diagnosis. But it’s very clear from the information I’ve received this afternoon that adaptions have been made. For example, New Zealand originally was on the agenda for the King and Queen to travel to – that has now been ruled out on doctor’s advice.”

“Because he’s been mindful that he’s undergoing cancer treatments, he’s also going to be spending some time at an engagement to do with melanoma and cancer treatment,” the royal expert added.

Queen Camilla’s son Tom Parker-Bowles shares update on King Charles & Queen Camilla

Although the focus has been on King Charles’ health recently, less is known about Queen Camilla’s health. In the past, Camilla has had plenty of health scares: she underwent a hysterectomy, broke both a leg and a toe, and struggled with sinusitis.

According to former BBC correspondent and royal commentator Peter Hunt, that adds “extra stress.”

“Her health has not been as robust as his up until this point. She has adjusted remarkably well, when you think that it’s only in the last few decades she’s actually been on the royal scene,” Hunt told The Guardian in February.

“She is now the queen and she will have to balance the two issues of responding to his needs as his partner and the demands of being the most senior royal.”

How the Queen is doing at the moment is relatively unknown. But her son, Tom Parker-Bowles, gave some rare insight a few days ago.

While promoting his new book, Cooking and the Crown, Parker-Bowles, a food critic and writer, revealed that King Charles’ “treatment is going well,” and also mentioned his mother.

He said she is coping well with everything going on, adding, “She’s tough, my mother,” per Express.

Time will tell how King Charles’ and Queen Camilla’s tour to Australia will work out regarding His Majesty’s health. However, we’re sure that they will enjoy escaping a rather cold and rainy England for a warmer climate, which surely will add value to both their relationship and maybe even their health.
